Women, Empowerment and Sustainability: Free Electrical Installation Workshop Opens New Opportunities in Itaboraí, Brazil

ITABORAÍ, RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL — A free electrical installation workshop aimed at empowering women through practical skills, environmental awareness, and income-generating opportunities is set to take place from October 19 to 23 in the Reta community of Itaboraí, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Social Technologies Workshop for Women – Electrical Installation will offer 20 hours of free training to 20 women aged 16 and older. Classes will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the headquarters of the Association of Residents of the Reta Community (AMOCREVEP).

The initiative is part of the LIpETEMOS Project and seeks to strengthen women’s autonomy by providing practical knowledge that can be applied to everyday life, small household repairs, and potential income-generating activities.

Practical Skills and Women’s Empowerment

The workshop adopts participatory teaching methods that place women’s experiences and the needs of their communities at the center of the learning process. Through hands-on activities, participants will be introduced to basic electrical concepts, with a focus on small domestic repairs and the creation of objects such as lamps.

By combining technical knowledge with creativity and the reuse of materials, the initiative aims to expand women’s access to practical skills while encouraging greater independence and new possibilities for economic participation.

The program also seeks to promote critical engagement with digital culture and demonstrate how accessible technologies can help address everyday challenges in local communities.

Sustainability and Environmental Awareness

Environmental education is another central component of the workshop. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on consumption, waste disposal, and the environmental impact of discarded materials.

Through the reuse of available resources, the activities will explore how materials that might otherwise be thrown away can be transformed into useful objects and creative solutions.

This approach connects technical learning with environmental responsibility, highlighting the potential of sustainable practices to support community development and make better use of local resources.

Supporting Women and Families

Recognizing the importance of family support in accessing educational opportunities, the organizers will provide a dedicated space for participants’ children during the workshop week, with a monitor available to supervise them.

The measure is intended to help mothers and caregivers participate in the training while ensuring that their children have a safe, supervised space during class hours.

A Community-Based Initiative

The Center for Training in the Blue Economy of Guanabara Bay (Centro de Formação em Economia do Mar – CFEcoMar) is coordinated by the Baía Viva Movement and works in partnership with Petrobras, with institutional support from the Center for Integrated Studies on the Environment and Sustainable Development at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (NIDES/UFRJ).

The initiative brings together more than 49 additional institutions, including public agencies, universities, community organizations, and traditional communities.

Through activities that connect education, sustainability, technology, and local knowledge, the project seeks to support community-based solutions and expand opportunities for women in the Guanabara Bay region.

The workshop reflects a broader approach to social development in which practical education can contribute to women’s autonomy, environmental awareness, and the strengthening of local economies.
